You are Your Own Best Flow Teacher

What do you do that flows effortlessly from you?

Just as you can become an expert at certain skills, you can also become proficient at finding flow in whatever you're doing.

You can identify an area of my life that comes easily to you, and use that to improve on areas where you struggle.

In the Living in Flow course, there's an exercise titled “From Challenge Area to Flow Area” which helps us learn from where we already flow in order to experience more flow in our challenges.

Where are you already proficient at flow?

  • Start by imagining what comes easy for you in life. Are you good at:

  • Being disciplined?

  • Relaxing and having fun?

  • Not taking yourself too seriously?

  • Respecting and believing in yourself?

  • Keeping a clean house?

  • Feeding yourself well?

  • Taking care of others?

  • Taking care of yourself?

  • A certain hobby?

Be specific. Think of the day you completed a big project. Or the time you got your house immaculate before your family came to visit. Or the time you had a successful job interview despite obstacles.

Identify Your Feelings and Strategies

What are three feelings you have when you're at your best? Are you calm, centered, and committed? Are you curious, enthusiastic, and open minded? Energized, focused, and disciplined?

Write these down.

What are three strategies you use when you're at your best? Do you:

  • Set aside unplanned time by blocking out your calendar?

  • Turn off the ringer on your phone?

  • Start early and do a little bit everyday?

  • Reach out to others and ask for help?

  • Organize your activities with the business plan?

  • Meditate first?

Write these down too.

Apply Your Flow Feelings and Strategies to Where You Feel Challenged

Now, close your eyes and imagine yourself doing something that challenges you, something in which you frequently feel struggle or resistance.

Imagine it.

Feel it.

Pause.

Now, continue picturing yourself doing this, but try out what it feels like to feel your flow feelings instead. You're reassociating this activity with the feeling of flow that is unique to you.

Picture yourself applying your flow strategies to this activity. How does that feel?

When you apply these strategies even in an area that you don't like, do you feel more flow?

You are already in flow...

The best person to learn flow from is you, because you have your own unique way of engaging with your life. Notice the areas of your life where you already feel flow, and apply the same behaviors to other areas of your life.
