Synchronicities Form the Rhythm of Flow
I find the meaningful moments in my life have a pulse. Synchronicities happen to a beat.
The first two steps of the LORRAX process—Listen to life, Open your mind—can help you feel the rhythm.
The Rhythm of Synchronicity
Consider this series of extraordinary events, each exactly a week apart, creating a pulse of transformation for me.
My journey began with a text message from my brother to rehearse with his band (that I wrote about last week). This reignited my joy for music.
The Next Saturday...
...a week later, I received a text from my cousin Jon inviting me to his Halloween party to be the Piano Bar Entertainer. I said yes but I was very nervous. The party was crazy and I was intimidated, until the totally surprising appearance of my childhood friend Gene! Having him there gave me confidence to overcome my fears.
And Another Saturday...
...Another Saturday rolled around. While visiting my parents, I received an unexpected text from the same guy, Gene, inviting me to hang out at our local bar. There, I was spontaneously asked to play the piano again. A strange mix of shyness and confidence engulfed me; it was intensely uncomfortable.
There's A Pattern
The following Saturday, though, I felt the pulse and wanted to keep the rhythm going by proactively creating my own challenge.
Attending an outdoor movie screening about Burning Man, I took along my guitar. Arriving early, I strummed a few songs casually until the director asked me to perform a set on stage. By now, after consecutive weeks of practice in that liminal space between shyness and confidence, I felt a new sense of myself.
I felt liberated and happy from the experience.
Finding Flow Is About Your Relationship To The Unexpected
In retrospect, these events, all unfolding on consecutive Saturdays, formed a rhythm in my life. The LORRAX process, especially the act of listening for unexpected information and staying open, helped me perceive this rhythm as it transpired.
So, here's a practice for you: Observe how you listen to life. Are you resistant to surprising advice or invitations? Are you overly receptive to them? What is your relationship to the unexpected? How do you like to be invited? Understanding this could be your gateway to a rhythm of flow.
